Rapid Clinical Updates: End-of-Life Care in the Hospital

This session will focus on enhancing hospitalists’ delivery of compassionate, patient-centered medical care at the end of life. Key topics will include recognizing signs of imminent death, managing pain and symptoms, addressing emotional and spiritual needs, and effective communication with healthcare team members, patients, and families. We will review ethical decision-making, cultural sensitivity, and interprofessional collaboration. Using case studies, we will illustrate best practices in palliative care. Participants will learn practical skills to support dignified end of life experiences, with tools to navigate complex care decisions and improve overall quality of care for patients in their final moments.

Speakers
Elizabeth Gundersen, MD, FHM, FAAHPM
Dr. Gundersen is an Associate Professor of Hospice & Palliative Medicine and Assistant Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She is the former Associate Division Chief of Hospital Medicine at UMass Memorial Health and currently practices inpatient palliative care. Dr. Gundersen is the outgoing chair of SHM’s palliative care special interest group and is passionate about the intersection of hospital medicine and palliative care.

Kencee Graves, MD, FACP
Dr. Graves is a Board Certified Palliative Medicine and Hospital Medicine physician, with clinical expertise in the quality of care, process improvement, and patient communication. Dr. Graves serves on the Society of Hospital Medicine Palliative Medicine Special Interest Forum Executive Committee.

Dr. Chadha is a Professor of Medicine and the Associate Vice Chair for Faculty Development and Advancement, Internal Medicine and the University of Kentucky. She also serves on the Rapid Clinical Updates planning group.
