The SHM Hampton Roads Chapter will be hosting a virtual meeting on Tuesday, July 22, 2025 at 6:30 p.m. ET. Please join the chapter for an educational presentation titled "The HIT List: A Practical Guide to Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia," provided by Dr. Nina Balanchivadze. Dr. Balanchivadze will discuss how hospitalists can recognize the clinical presentation of HIT, emphasizing timing, thrombocytopenia patterns, and the paradoxical risk of thrombosis. She will review how to apply appropriate diagnostic strategies for HIT, how to implement evidence-based treatment approaches, and address special clinical scenarios, such as HIT management in cardiac surgery and re-exposure to heparin.
Dr. Nina Balanchivadze earned her medical degree from Tbilisi State Medical University in Tbilisi, Georgia, completed her internal medicine residency at Yale - New Haven Medical Center (Yale University) in New Haven, CT, and subspecialty training in Hematology/Oncology at Henry Ford Health/Henry Ford Cancer Institute in Detroit, MI, where she served as Chief Fellow. She has extensive leadership and educational experience, having served as core clinical faculty and Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at Grand Strand Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, SC, where she was also Chief of Medicine for a 369-bed acute care hospital. Throughout her career, Dr. Balanchivadze has presented research at numerous national and international conferences, published multiple abstracts and manuscripts, and has been recognized with several awards, including multiple Resident of the Year, Teaching Attending Physician, and Mentor of the Year honors, as well as the Outstanding Fellow Awards. Dr. Balanchivadze’s clinical interests include Breast Cancer and Classical Hematology. She is deeply committed to delivering personalized and compassionate care for her patients.
