The SHM Hampton Roads Chapter will be hosting a virtual meeting on Tuesday, August 12th at 1:00 p.m. ET. Drs. Katherine Schaffer and Megan Duggins-Powers will be providing an educational presentation titled "Recognizing and Responding to Human Trafficking in Healthcare: A Trauma-Informed Approach for Hospitalists."
Hospitalists are on the front lines of care and are uniquely positioned to recognize signs of human trafficking. Join us for a dynamic and practical discussion designed to empower clinicians with the tools to identify, support, and advocate for patients who may be victims of trafficking and violence.
In this session, participants will learn from the experts how to recognize the various forms of human trafficking, identify at-risk populations, and spot red flags during clinical encounters. The presentation will also cover key statistics related to domestic violence, intimate partner violence, and sexual assault, while introducing the core principles of trauma-informed care. Attendees will leave with a practical and personalized response plan for effectively and compassionately supporting patients.
Dr. Katherine Schaffer is an Emergency Medicine Physician and Global Health Fellow at Eastern Virginia Medical School. She has worked with underserved populations of Hampton Roads since 2017, providing primary care, mental health resources, and advocacy for housing, food, and access to care. She is the co-founder of both the EVMS Street Health Medical Team and the Blue Heart Clinic, which provides trauma-informed care to individuals impacted by domestic violence, human trafficking, and sexual assault. Dr. Schaffer also serves as a community educator with Red Flags to Freedom, training healthcare providers on trauma-informed care and hospital response protocols.
Dr. Megan Duggins-Powers is a third-year Emergency Medicine Resident at Eastern Virginia Medical School and the founder of Red Flags to Freedom, a nonprofit dedicated to survivor-centered training on human trafficking. She co-founded the EVMS Blue Heart Clinic and has been recognized with the 2024 “Health Care Hero Award” for her advocacy work in increasing Human Trafficking awareness. Her efforts focus on developing trauma-informed care protocols and educating medical professionals on how to better support victims of violence and exploitation.
