Please join the chapter for networking and for an educational discussion of the topics and highlights from SHM Converge 2022 lead by Dr. Maria Barksy and Dr. Smita Kalra

Dr. Barsky is a an assistant professor at UC Irvine Medical Center. She graduated from UCI medical school in 2017 and completed her internal medicine residency at UCSD in 2020. Her academic interests  include medical education, clinical reasoning, healthcare communication and observation medicine. She is currently the director for observation medicine at UCI. She has also worked to develop a three-year “resident as teacher curriculum” at UC Irvine. She currently resides in Orange County with her husband, dog and two cats.

Smita Kalra is a practicing hospitalist and medical director for pre-operative clinic at University of California Irvine Medical Center and Associate Professor at UC Irvine Medical School, Irvine California. She has been a practicing hospitalist for over 10 years and has led numerous studies and protocols for peri-operative care pathways. She has been an invited speaker at local and national meetings where she has shared her work and expertise in Peri-operative and Co-management services. She has previously led work at Michigan Hospital Medicine Consortium (BCBS led QI program) for quality and safety initiatives. She serves on the SHM Peri-operative Executive Council and Society for Peri-operative Assessment and Quality Improvement (SPAQI) guidelines committee. Dr Kalra is specifically interested in improving and building anemia optimization pathways for surgical patients and is involved with the Blood Utilization Committee at UCI.  She believes in a collaborative approach in peri-operative care and is often helping establish protocols both inside and outside of her institution.
